Introduction

Chinese is the most popular mother tongue language spoken all over the world. If a student can speak competently in Chinese and English then he/she is able to communicate with a vast percentage of the world population.
There are many dialects of the Chinese language including Cantonese, Hakka, mandarin etc. This book will teach the mandarin dialect of Chinese. This is spoken in most parts of China and Taiwan.
We have chosen to use the Chinese phonetic alphabet to teach students Chinese. There is some controversy as to which method is the best to use, either roman pinyin or the Chinese pronunciation system. We feel that the students pronunciation will be clearer and more accurate when using the pronunciation system.
Chinese is a tonal language and when a similar sounding word is pronounced the tone in which the word is pronounced can alter its meaning completely.
Written Chinese is very complex to learn and will require the student to study Chinese for many years. This book will concentrate on the conversational aspect of Chinese although towards the rear of the book will introduce written characters.
